autoimmune disorders

Science Based Evaluations and Comprehensive Support

Clues of autoimmunity

You may have an autoimmune disorder if:

  • Symptoms are chronic and nothing has helped
  • Many doctors, many treatments with limited results or periodic short term improvement
  • Lots of medical tests with no clear answer
  • Countless bottles of drugs and supplements without significant gain
  • Given a diagnosis for a chronic condition (i.e. Lyme, mold, heavy metals, mercury intoxication, parasites) but treatments haven't helped

Influences and drivers of autoimmunity

Autoimmunity is multi-faceted, complex and unique to every individual. In this condition, the immune system is dyregulated and identifies self-tissue as foreign, leading to an immune response against normal tissue. There is no singular path and multiple mechanisms can be at play which drives the aberrant immune function including: active infection (viral, bacterial, mold, spirochete), chemical sensitivities, food sensitivities or intolerances, abnormal gut microbes or dysbiosis, blood sugar disorders, hormonal imbalances, environmental influences, detoxification omissions, loss of self-tolerance, psycho-neuro-immune promotion, brain injury and many others.

Conditions and disorders

Many individuals have been diagnosed with a health condition but don't know that it is an autoimmune disorder. Without proper treatment, these conditions may result in progressive deterioration and worsening over time. Some of these conditions include hypothyroidism, low adrenal function or Addison's disease, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome, psoriasis, B-12 anemia, arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, non-viral hepatitis, gluten sensitivity, interstitial cystitis (bladder), Meniere's disease, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, epilepsy, infertility, autism spectrum disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, narcolepsy, lupus, multiple sclerosis, type I diabetes and others.

Laboratory testing for autoimmunity

A routine blood count (CBC) provides important insights to immune function. Other routine measures include evaluation of blood sugar, hormones, food and chemical sensitivities, vitamin deficiencies, detoxification efficiency, gastrointestinal health and microbiome evaluation including consideration of pathogens (i.e. Epstein Barr, mycoplasma, cytomegalovirus, herpes virus and others) and parasites. Advanced evaluation includes tests for autoantibodies against self-tissues, cytokine (inflammatory markers) panels, complement C3/C4, T and B lymphocyte and natural kill cell profiles among others. Understanding the landscape through laboratory evaluation helps guide more informed treatment and support strategies. For more information on advanced specialized testing visit Cyrex Laboratories.

Essential for living with autoimmunity

Autoimmunity is condition that cannot be cured. Instead, the goal is to achieve symptomatic control and hold the condition in a relative state of clinical silence. Identifying primary drivers and living a healthy lifestyle can minimize flares.. For some, oral pathogens can be triggers and dental hygiene will be essential to minimize flare-ups. In general, some key considerations are:

  • Regular sleep schedule
  • Healthy stress management
  • Regular exercise
  • Healthy relationships
  • Stabilizing blood sugar
  • Minimizing salt intake (except Addison's)
  • Avoiding food coloring
  • Wide diversity of healthy food choices
  • Many will need to avoid nightshades, lectins, dairy and gluten

Essential supplemental supports

Support decisions must be tailored to the unique needs of the individual. In general terms, however, support for regulatory T-cells may be beneficial. These include:

  • Vitamin D3
  • Vitamin A
  • Omega 3 fish oils
  • Probiotic

Leaky gut or increased intestinal permeability is only one potential mechanism contributing to autoimmunity. Yet, most individuals should be evaluated for this condition and given specific recommendations to promote intestinal repair and healthy barrier function with the intent of improving immune tolerance. The autoimmune paleo diet is one example.
