Where do I go to have my labs collected?

For the convenience of our patients, labs are collected at Dr. Schimp's clinic and the specimens are processed at major US medical labs throughout the country. Many lab results return within 24 hours while advanced lab tests may require up to 2 weeks for results. We have accounts with top testing companies and utilize physician coops so we can offer lower prices. The cost of labs performed by Dr. Schimp are considerably less than what you will pay at larger health centers. We provide hundreds of tests range from those that are very common to those that are very specialized. While we require payment for labs at the time of service, we will submit a claim on your behalf to your insurance carrier. If your carrier covers the cost of the service you will receive reimbursement directly from your insurance company.

My friend was just diagnosed with cancer. How can you help?

Dr. Schimp provides integrative cancer support based on his training in the Eclectic Triphasic Medical System (ETMS) of cancer care. One of the goals of ETMS is to create an internal micro-environment that is inhospitable to cancer. This is accomplished by using laboratory biomarkers to survey the biochemical terrain of the individual in key areas like immunity, blood sugar regulation, inflammation, blood clotting, oxidative stress, hormones and specific cancer markers. Dr. Schimp will first address lifestyle and dietary matters followed by recommendations for specific botanical agents and nutraceuticals to impact and favorably influence the terrain. For example, fibrinogen is a protein involved in clot formation. It is an essential protein but when levels of fibrinogen become elevated it acts to protect cancer cells from recognition by the immune system. We routinely monitor fibrinogen and other bio-markers that enable cancer cells to evade the immune system or create an environment conducive to cancer proliferation. While traditional medical care is a necessary part of your treatment plan, it does not often provide patients with support on matters related to strengthening your immune system, changing your internal terrain and optimizing nutritional health through diet, lifestyle and supplementation.

I have been treated for cancer but am concerned about recurrence.

Dr. Schimp will collaborate with your oncologist to provide a sustainable program that will modify your risk factors for recurrence. It is important to recognize that cancer is a chronic disease and should be carefully monitored throughout the individual’s lifetime following diagnosis. We’ll discuss dietary and lifestyle influences that lower risk as well as monitor labs and apply botanical/nutraceutical supports to create an environment that does not favor cancer cells. Cancer risk reduction is not just about preventing cancer the first time but limiting the risk of recurrence after a diagnosis.

I've just been diagnosed with cancer. I don't know what to do?

Being told you have cancer is a life changing moment. It is frightening and overwhelming. By the time that cancer is detected it has often been in the body for many years. On rare occasion urgent action is necessary, but in most cases it is wise to slow down, gain the support of family and friends, regain your equilibrium and make genuinely informed decisions about your health without pressure. Dr. Schimp can provide you with additional support to help you make informed and balanced decisions.

I read on the internet about low adrenals. Can you test my adrenals?

Yes. Adrenal Gland Evaluation should be considered if you have trouble staying asleep, crave salt, are a slow starter in the morning, experience afternoon fatigue, feel dizzy upon standing up quickly, suffer from afternoon headaches or headaches with exertion or stress, have weak nails, perspire easily, are under a high amount of stress or gain weight when under stress.

Salivary testing is preferred for assessment of adrenal function but in some cases blood chemistry will be recommended. DiagnosTechs Adrenal Stress Index tests cortisol release throughout a single day, DHEA, fasting and non-fasting insulin, 17 hydroxyprogesterone, secretory IgA and also provides a screening assessment for gliadin antibodies (to assess grain tolerance).

The human adrenal glands do not secrete steroid hormones at a constant level throughout the day. The hormones are actually released in a cycle, with the highest value in the morning and the lowest value at night when functioning properly. Deviations from a normal diurnal rhythm or in quantity (levels) of cortisol are important clues in the assessment of adrenal gland function.

If a functional disorder of the adrenal glands is identified, a number of botanical (plant based), dessicated glandular or nutraceutical adrenal supports can be utilized. Most people respond well to these supplements. The rebuilding period can be several weeks to months in duration.

I would like a comprehensive thyroid evaluation. Can you help?

Yes. A comprehensive thyroid evaluation should be considered if you are tired and sluggish, feel cold all over or have cold hands and feet, require excessive amounts of sleep to function properly, have increased weight even on a low calorie diet, gain weight easily, have difficult or infrequent bowel movements, are depressed or lack motivation, experience morning headaches that wear off as the day progresses, notice thinning of the outer 1/3rd of your eyebrows, have dry skin or scalp or are mentally sluggish. Any of these symptoms can be an indication that your thyroid gland is not performing optimally (hypothyroid).

In some cases, your thyroid may be overactive (hyperthyroid) if you experience heart palpitations, inward trembling, increased pulse at rest, are nervous or emotional and have trouble sleeping.

Dr. Schimp performs comprehensive thyroid assessments that evaluate for hypothyroidism, autoimmune hypothyroidism (Hashimoto's thyroiditis) and hyperthyroidism. Lab testing may include:

· Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)

· Free T3

· Total T3

· Free T4

· Total T4

· Thyroid peroxidase antibodies

· Thyroglobulin antibodies

· T3uptake

· Reverse T3

· Serum iodine

· In some cases addition testing may be recommended

In the event that a functional thyroid disorder is identified, natural supports will be recommended.

I think my hormones are "off". can you test hormones?

Yes. Hormonal Health Assessment can provide useful information when infertility is a concern or menstrual or post-menopausal symptoms are present. Alternating menstrual cycle length, pain and cramping during periods, scant flow, heavy flow, breast pain or tenderness, pelvic pain during menses, acne, facial hair growth, hair loss or thinning, hot flashes, mental fogginess, mood swings, lack of libido, depression and dryness are indications of hormonal imbalance.

For women who are menstruating the expanded cycling female hormone panel is the preferred assessment method. The Diagnos-Techs™ Female Hormone Panels are easy-to-collect saliva tests to evaluate levels of various hormones that play a role in female reproductive function. These hormones fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle; therefore, testing your levels on only one day of the month may not give an accurate portrayal of the dynamic balance of your hormones. With the Female Hormone Panels, 11 separate samples are taken throughout the entire menstrual cycle in order to gain a more complete understanding of what may be contributing to your symptoms. Your hormone levels can be measured from your saliva, which can be collected easily and painlessly in the convenience of your own home.

Men interested in testosterone support will usually receive blood tests. Tests for total and free testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, leutinizing hormone, follicle stimulating hormone and estradiol are collected early morning and repeated at 30 day intervals to assess response to the testosterone support protocol. It is also important for men to remember that problems relating to couple infertility involve both parties - both the man and woman may require support.

I think I have leaky gut or a food sensitivity. What can you do for me?

Gastrointestinal Health Evaluations are one of the most common requests. Evaluation may include assessment for leaky gut syndrome, food sensitivities, liver, pancreatic and gallbladder health, h.pylori infections (gastric ulcer), comprehensive stool analysis for bacteria, microbial ecology, parasites and intestinal inflammation. Symptoms of poor GI health may include abdominal distention, constipation, diarrhea, nutritional malabsorption, distress with greasy foods, bloating, bitter metallic taste in mouth, burping, difficulty losing weight, yellow cast to the eyes, reddening skin (especially palms), dry or flaking skin, itching skin, pain in the right shoulder blade or under the rib cage, abdominal pain, heartburn, gastroesophogeal reflux, acne, eczema, excessive hair loss, foul gas, offensive breath and a coated tongue.

I have a family history of heart disease. Can lab evaluation help assess my risk?

Yes. Physical examination and laboratory evaluation can provide useful insights to help you identify and manage heart related risk factors. In some cases, Dr. Schimp may refer you for additional medical evaluation and stress testing. Dr. Schimp performs a comprehensive series of labs to assess risk factors for heart and stroke risk that often exceeds the level of testing performed in traditional medical settings. Some of these markers include homocysteine, fibrinogen, Lipoprotein (a), apolipoprotein evaluation, hemoglobin A1c, C-peptide, insulin, high sensitivity CRP and the routine lipid panel. Dietary, lifestyle and natural supplemental support options are encouraged. Benefits of integrative support options can be measured on follow-up testing which is often performed at 2 month intervals during intensive therapy.

I am concerned about my blood sugar and diabetes. Can you monitor this for me?

Yes. Blood sugar dysregulation problems including pre-diabetes and diabetes should be monitored regularly with routine lab tests. Dietary, lifestyle and natural supplemental support options are encouraged. Benefits of integrative support options can be measured on follow-up testing which is often performed at 3 month intervals during intensive therapy.

I see a lot of articles on the internet about autoimmunity. Do I have it?

Autoimmunity is a growing problem that is expected to be epidemic in nature. In a nutshell, autoimmunity is when your immune system attacks your own bodily tissues. It might present as joint tissue destruction causing pain and arthritis, an attack on your thyroid causing hypo/hyperthyroidism or numerous other tissues - even your brain. Dr. Schimp uses standard laboratory testings to screen for autoimmunity and in difficult cases he will utilize Cyrex laboratories, a premier lab in autoimmune testing.

I would like to know what vitamins I need. Is there a test for that?

SpectraCell’s Micronutrient test provides the most comprehensive nutritional analysis available by measuring functional deficiencies at the cellular level. It is an assessment of how well the body utilizes 33 vitamins, minerals, amino/fatty acids, antioxidants, and metabolites, while conveying the body’s need for these micronutrients that enable the body to produce enzymes, hormones, and other substances essential for proper growth, development, and good health. This test provides the basis of a personalized, functional approach in addressing a broad variety of clinical conditions including arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular risk, diabetes, various immunological disorders, metabolic disorders and micronutrient deficiencies.

SpectraCell provides easy-to-read test reports for the clinician and the patient. SpectraCell has incorporated numerical and graphic representations for each result, and we offer repletion suggestions based on each patient’s deficiencies.

How do you test for lyme disease?

Dr. Schimp will use traditional Lyme screening tests (IFA) and IgG/IgM Western Blot analysis. These tests are affordable but do not always provide the highest sensitivity. In some cases Dr. Schimp will recommend Lyme and other tick borne lab tests from IgeneX, a premier lab on the west coast. These tests provide a much higher sensitivity than traditional local tests.

Friends tell me I don't have to get "cracked" to benefit from chiropractic.

True. The majority of Dr. Schimp's patients elect to receive instrument spinal manipulation as opposed to the older style of manual manipulation. Arthrostim is a gentle adjusting tool with a powerful effect. Comfortable high speed repetitive impulses quickly summate within bodily tissues to introduce dynamic forces on muscle spindles and joint receptors (mechanoreceptors). The outcome is improved joint function and the alleviation of muscle tension, nerve compression and pain. This procedure is comfortable and very well tolerated.

Activator is a high-speed, low force chiropractic adjusting instrument that provides accurate and consistent thrust to heal injuries of the spine and extremities. Patients of all ages benefit from the gentle procedure including young children and older adults.

Do you believe in relieving tension in soft tissues?

Absolutely. Dr. Schimp uses manual (hands-on) approaches or Vibracussor Myofascial Release. This is a pleasant instrument assisted therapy that relaxes muscles and fascia. It differs from massage in that it uses a piston-like up and down movement rather than a back and forth movement. This creates comfortable waves of compression that travel through the tissues to the affected muscles and fascia. In addition to relaxing muscle and releasing soft tissue fascial adhesions, the Vibracussor may also improve circulation and lymph flow.

Can you treat disc problems and degenerative arthritis?

Yes. Flexion Distraction Manipulation is a gentle procedure that is research documented to relieve lower back and leg pain from disorders like lumbar disc herniation, lumbar spinal stenosis, post-surgical chronic lower back pain, lumbar spine degeneration and arthritis. This form of manipulation provides a comfortable distraction (separation) of joint structures to alleviate or reduce pressure on spinal nerves, spinal joints and stretches soft tissues of the lower back.
